There are still a few key features being developed into future versions of ext4, including metadata checksumming, first-class quota support, and large allocation blocks. Ext4 is functionally very similar to ext3, but brings large filesystem support, improved resistance to resources fragmentation, higher performance, and improved timestamps. Writeback is the third—and least safe—journaling mode. In writeback mode, like ordered mode, metadata is journaled, but data is not.
